How to Refer a Student

If you're concerned about a student's progress — or you simply think they'd benefit from extra support — you can connect them with Sanger in a couple of minutes. A referral is a nudge, not a report; the student decides whether to follow up.

Three ways to refer

  1. Point them to the right service. Learning Specialists and Peer Academic Coaching for study strategies, time management and exam prep; appointment tutoring for course content; or the Math Refreshers & Reviews for Calculus support.
  2. Send us their name. Email slc@austin.utexas.edu with the student's name and your concern, and a staff member will reach out to them.
  3. Tell the whole class. Normalize getting help by mentioning Sanger in class, dropping our services sheet into a Canvas annoucement, or adding our syllabus statement. You can also request a workshop from one of our trained student facilitators, if you'd like to bring academic support to your whole class.

What to tell the student

All Sanger services are free and open to all UT students. Reassure them that seeking academic support is part of being a successful student. You can also encourage students to check the Personalized Academic Resource Locator (PEARL) for campus-wide supports, tailored to their schedule.

Don't Cancel Class Program

Are you planning to miss one or more classes this semester for professional or personal reasons? Rather than canceling class, consider offering your students a valuable learning opportunity by scheduling a workshop through our Don't Cancel Class program.

The Sanger Learning Center provides engaging workshops on various topics to support student success. These workshops can:

  • Enhance your students’ learning and skill development.
  • Provide meaningful, interactive experiences that complement your course content.
  • Help keep your students on track during your absence.

Please review the available workshop topics and complete the request form. Once you submit it, a team member will reach out to finalize the details.

We suggest you submit your request as soon as possible to make sure we can accommodate it. Short-notice requests may not be guaranteed.

Course Support: Supplemental Instruction & Peer-Led Team Learning

The Sanger Learning Center partners with instructors to embed peer-led study support directly in your course through two flexible programs: Supplemental Instruction (SI) and Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL). In both, we hire and train student Leaders — who earned a B+ or better in your course — to run twice-weekly collaborative sessions where students work through concepts together rather than sit through a re-lecture. The difference is how involved you want to be: SI is the most hands-off, with Leaders creating their own lessons, while PLTL gives you more control through instructor-created worksheets and a brief weekly check-in with your Leader.
